Revolutionary heritage. After lunch on your own, visit the Jamestown Settlement. Thirteen years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, after a four-and-a-halfmonth voyage to Virginia, a group of 104 English men and boys established a settlement on the banks of the James River. Located
adjacent to the original site, this living-history museum offers full-scale re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, three 1607 ships and colonial fort. Learn the REAL story of Pocahontas. Guided tour at Jamestown Settlement is led by a trained guide, highlighting each museum's exhibition galleries and outdoor living -history area. These hands-on, inquiry-oriented based tours encourage you to handle reproduction objects, interact with costumed historical interpreters, and explore museum galleries and re-created outdoor settings. At the end of the day, dine with your traveling companions before we Light up the holidays with the award-winning Celebration in Lights, a two mile drive through Newport News Park that includes spectacular animated scenes. View whimsical toys, elegant swans, leaping reindeer, multicolored snowflakes and scenes from Virginia's past portrayed in a kaleidoscope of dazzling color. Enjoy a full day at Colonial Williamsburg. Your Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket provides one-day access to the Historic Area exhibition sites, museums, trade shops and Revolutionary City programming during the afternoon. Lunch on your own at Williamsburg Merchants Square. Enjoy lunch on your own in Williamsburg’s Merchants Square, a charming area with shaded sidewalks and colonial-style architecture. Choose from a variety of inviting spots offering everything from gourmet sandwiches to local seafood and hearty pub fare. Finally, you will take the Colonial Williamsburg Christmas Decorations Walking Tour, and learn of decoration before electric lights. You will also have time on your own to explore all that Colonial Williamsburg has to offer as well as visit the Colonial Shops. Enjoy a colonial-inspired dinner at a historic Williamsburg tavern, where 18th-century charm meets hearty fare. After dinner the Grand Illumination Festivities Begins. The Grand Illumination is an adaptation of a common practice during the 18th century, when ordinary citizens celebrated extraordinary events – major military victories, the arrival of a new colonial governor, or the birthday of the monarch – by firing guns and using fireworks.
The festivities begin with a variety of traditional holiday entertainment – Fifes and Drums provide 18th-century holiday music, balladeers and musicians perform, church choirs sing Christmas carols and costumed performers present entertainment found in Williamsburg 200 years ago. Followed by the Grand Illumination Fireworks, a magnificent fireworks display will take place simultaneously at three locations in the Historic Area – Palace Green, the Magazine, and the Capitol. Candles are then lit in the public buildings, shops and homes, throughout Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area.
