About this trip
Tenement Museum, Museum on Eldridge and Essex Market
Thursday August 8, 2024
As immigrants came to New York City in the late 19th and early 20th Century, many moved to the Lower East Side into crowded tenements. From a significant German population followed by Italians, Eastern European Jews, Greeks, Hungarians, Poles, Romanians, Russians, the area became predominately Jewish by 1920. During the post war years, the neighborhood became more Latin and today Chinatown has expanded into the Lower East Side. Explore a recreated apartment inside historical tenement buildings with a guided tour. (Group will be broken into smaller groups for different tours) Lunch will be enjoyed on your own at Essex Market. Built in 1940 the original building was one of four markets built to house the pushcarts of the Lower East Side. Finally, you will Explore the 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first great house of worship by Eastern European Jewish immigrants in the United States.
Package includes motor coach transportation, Tenement tour, Eldridge Tour, driver's gratuity and trip leader.
